Expansion plans for Bristol Airport were submitted to North Somerset Council yesterday. The plans include extending the terminal, adding more car park spaces and building new aircraft stands, in order for the airport to be able to handle 10m passengers a year by 2016. The airport claims that 4000 jobs could be created and £340m injected into the local economy if the plans are approved, however local campaigners and MPs have questioned these numbers.
Robert Sinclair, Bristol Airport's chief executive, said: ‘Over the last 6 months we have listened to views relating to the development of the airport [during a public consultation on the plans]. In response to requests from the local community, we have introduced a cap on night flights, as well as maintaining the current night noise quota. We will commit to maintaining CO2 emissions at or below 2007 levels with 20 percent of the additional energy required by this development coming from on-site renewable sources.’
