Three Gatwick laser incidents investigated
30.08.10
Police are investigating three reports of a laser being shone at a plane landing at Gatwick in less than a week. In the latest incident a Sussex Police helicopter was scrambled shortly after 23:00 on Saturday when a red beam was directed at a plane coming in to land.
Last week police were also called to attempt to trace the source of the laser beam that was directed at two descending planes, but were unable to find it. The beam came from the East Grinstead area. All three planes landed safely.
A police spokesman said: ‘Shining a laser at a plane can interfere with the flight crew as they carry out important procedures and is very dangerous. It is a serious criminal offence and we are investigating.’ Anyone who has information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 607 0999.
