Last year was the worst in post war history for the aviation industry, IATA said yesterday. The airline trade body said 2009 saw the largest post-war decline in scheduled air traffic. Director general Giovanni Bisignani said: '2009 goes into the history books as the worst year the industry has ever seen. We lost 2½ years of passenger growth.’

He said that airlines face ‘enormous challenges’ this year, adding: ‘The worst may be behind us, but it is no time to celebrate. Adjusting to 2½ years of lost growth means that they face another Spartan year focused on matching capacity carefully to demand and controlling costs.’
