Frank Sinatra, Princess Diana and the Beatles have taken centre stage in an exhibition at Heathrow Terminal 5 featuring some of the world’s greatest stars passing through the airport. The exhibition celebrates the career of theits longest serving resident photographer, Dennis Stone, who has worked at the hub for 64 years.
The 78-year old started working at Heathrow as a messenger boy aged 14, and continues to work there for 3 days each week. His pictures are regularly featured in national newspapers and he also appeared in the BBC television series Airport, with the early programmes featuring his activities as the ‘grandfather’ of celebrity photography. Underlining his professionalism and charm, many actors and musicians count him as a friend, with Joan Collins including him on her Christmas card list.
Heathrow has designated two Expo locations – areas of the airport set aside for exhibitions – in Terminal 5 to celebrate Dennis’ contribution to life at Heathrow. Launched yesterday they showcase images from the book 'A Life At The Airport: A Heathrow Photographer’ published to celebrate his long tenure at the hub.
The first exhibition features over 20 of Dennis' favourite photographs and insights into the stars he has met over the last 64 years. As well as unique images of actors such as Clint Eastwood and Jack Nicholson, it also includes intimate moments such as a picture of The Queen’s corgis disembarking a plane after landing at the airport.
The second exhibition area, the Expo Gallery in departures, houses 25 framed photographs taken by Dennis. It offers passengers the opportunity to bid for the pictures, with the proceeds going to Heathrow’s Charity of the Year, Help for Heroes. It will also be one of a number of sites across the airport where passengers can pick up a free copy of ‘A Life At The Airport: A Heathrow Photographer’.
