Heathrow Airport has slammed a survey from price comparison website Kelkoo that claims it offers the worst savings compared to the high street of 10 leading European hubs. The survey says tax free goods at the European airports were on average 6.2% cheaper than in local high street stores, based on a selected basket of 22 goods, but that Heathrow offered just 3.1% average savings.
BAA has said the report is ‘both misleading and incorrect’, that Kelkoo’s data ‘is based on inaccurate prices at Heathrow and European airport prices at a false exchange rate’ and also includes products not available at Heathrow.
A spokesman for the airport said: ‘We offer great savings across a wide range of products and brands compared to the high street, typically at discounts of 15% or more. We benchmark our prices against those on the high street to ensure we offer great discounts. Many technology items are at better prices than at websites Amazon, John Lewis and Comet.’
