Unite will resume talks with BA in the dispute over pay and staffing next week while preparing for legal action over the airline’s withdrawal of travel perks for striking cabin crew, it announced yesterday. The union claims BA breached European human rights laws when it withdrew the benefits for striking staff, and the concessions were taken away without correct disciplinary procedures being followed. BA said it had acted properly in withdrawing the benefit.
Unite said yesterday that it will resume talks with the airline next week via the conciliation service ACAS. The union also said it will provide additional financial support to members who have suffered hardship after losing pay whilst striking.
It said: ‘Unite remains determined to secure a settlement to this dispute acceptable to cabin crew. Until such an agreement is secured, we will continue to support our members both financially and legally.’
BA said it acted properly in withdrawing the travel benefits. It said: ‘Staff travel is a non-contractual benefit that we can withdraw at our discretion. Cabin crew knew that if they took part in strike action, they would lose these travel perks. We reject these latest claims from Unite and will defend our position vigorously.’
