British Airways says that its proposed transatlantic alliance with American Airlines and Iberia has won wide support from business and consumer groups, airports and politicians in the US. It says that almost 3400 letters in favour of the deal have been sent to the US Department of Transportation (DoT) as part of its consultation, which ended yesterday.
BA chief executive Willie Walsh said: ‘This is overwhelming evidence of the popular support for our joint business from across the US and contrasts strongly with the lone airline voice of opposition [a swipe at Virgin Atlantic]. We are confident that the DoT will grant us the approval that we need to bring benefits to customers and create a level playing field among global airline alliances.’
BA, AA and Iberia, along with fellow oneworld members Finnair and Royal Jordanian, have applied for anti-trust immunity from the DoT and are also seeking approval from the EU. The DoT will issue its decision by October 31 and it is anticipated that the EU process will be concluded by the end for the year.
