Luton Airport will issue fines of up to £80 for passengers arriving by car or taxi who try to avoid a drop-off fee introduced last summer by parking on roads near the terminal. In July last year the airport introduced a £1 fee to drop off passengers in a dedicated car park near the terminal. Some drivers have tried to avoid the fee by dropping off passengers on approach roads, causing traffic problems.
From next Monday (August 23), the airport will issue a penalty charge of £80 to drivers who stop their vehicles to drop off or pick up passengers on the approach roads, the roundabout, or bus lane leading up to the terminal. The penalty charge will be reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days. The airport says the charge will not benefit it financially - although if it increases use of the drop off car park, we think it will.
Passengers or those dropping off / collecting passengers can park in the mid-term car park for up to one hour free of charge, with transfers via a regular, fee shuttle bus.
