Rail passengers faced travel chaos yesterday after the Manchester Airport to Manchester Piccadilly line was closed by cable theft. The railway line, which carries Northern Rail and First TransPennine Express services, was shut in both directions from 05:00 until noon after the theft of a power and telecom cables at Slade Lane in Burnage, which caused signal failure.
The route carries six services an hour in each direction. Rail replacement buses were put on to transport passengers to their destinations, as engineers repaired the line, with holidaymakers travelling to catch flights at Manchester Airport facing delays of around an hour on their journey.
