A centenary of flight in Hampshire was marked yesterday with a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The flypast over Southampton Water included Hurricanes, a Lancaster and Spitfires, which were built locally. The Spitfire took its first test flight from what is now Southampton Airport in 1936.
In 1910 Edwin Rowland Moon was Southampton's first aviator. He made his flight from North Stoneham Farm, on land that is now Southampton Airport. The centenary event was organised by Eastleigh Borough Council and was watched by hundreds of people.
